Description:
Created in 1968 by Mario Cefalu, a baker and Sicilian transplant, Solunto grew to become a sit-down restaurant in 2009 by way of Mario's son Domenick. Thriving through the foundation of true Sicilian culture, Panificio e Restaurante Solunto (whose name was originally just "Solunto" after the small town where Mario grew up), serves up freshly made pastries, bread, deli sandwiches and traditional Italian cuisine. With everything made from scratch Domenick, formerly the only chef in the restaurant, worked hard to keep the decades old company running following his father's death in 2006. But Solunto's nature stayed true to Little Italy's roots - as Mario was the founder of San Diego's Sicilian Festival - and keeps veteran customers happy with the same recipes used years ago. Based more on Mario's style than true Sicilian food, the restaurant keeps customers happy with traditional baked crusty bread, meatball sandwiches and cannoli.
