The hills are alive with the sounds of Salzburg! This is a famously musical town. Residenzgalerie Salzburg is an opulent palace, just north of Domplatz in the pedestrian zone, that was the seat of the Salzburg prince-archbishops after they no longer needed the protection of the gloomy Fortress Hohensalzburg (Festung Hohensalzburg) the stronghold of the ruling prince-archbishops before they moved "downtown" to the Residenz. This fortress towers 400 feet above the Salzach River on a rocky dolomite ledge. You can reach the Fortress Hohensalzburg conveniently on the Fortress funicular. Alternately you can hike up the mountain on foot. The Fortress Mountain is connected with the Moenchsberg (Monks Mountain). After your visit the castle, undertake some impressive "city" hikes and enjoy the gorgeous views into the city. If you are a devotee of contemporary art, Museum de Moderne Salzburg is the place. It is built on the side of Mönchsberg Mountain overlooking the city. There are of course other things to do besides listen to Salzburg so put on your walking shoes and explore them all.
