The small dormitory town of San Lorenzo, separated from the city of Salta by a short, fast highway (15km), is a great place to base yourself if you'd rather have peace and quiet than busy nightlife and lots of action. San Lorenzo has more to offer in the way of accommodation, traditional eateries and tranquility than actual sights. This nature reserve, thrust up against the Andean foothills, is an exception however – explore its winding trails with a local guide, who will point out the flora and fauna that thrives in this protected area, not least dozens of varieties of birds, some of which have been reappearing in the vicinity thanks to the diligent work of local conservationists.
