Description:

One of the most distinctive churches in the country, the Iglesia San Francisco is a major landmark in Salta's historic center. Immediately recognizable for its burgundy paint work set off with ivory and golden yellow details, including amazing curtains of white plasterwork over the main doors, it is one of the most photographed sights in the city – postcards, calendars and publicity sport its handsome tower, built in the early 19th century to the plans of an Italian architect, Luigi Giorgi. This belfry is said to be the tallest on the whole continent and houses a bell made from cannons melted after the war of independence. The cloisters of the neighboring convent can only be visited on guided tours, which also explain the fascinating interior of the church, plus a small museum whose exhibits include some delicate artifacts from Etruria.
