Salamanca matches its busy days with vibrant nights whether in dancing, drinking, feasting or simply sitting in awe of its beauty and culture. Discotheques are popular after 12 a.m. and are frequented by the young in throngs and even some of the old. Bars are attended by most in the their late teens and beyond and are available in a variety of price ranges and atmospheres.
The Plaza Mayor (main plaza) is utterly stunning at night because the walls within are light from below to highlight the prestige and detail in the architecture and construction. A hectic day traveling and seeing the sites warrants a glass of wine or cold beer at a table in the square. Considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, the Plaza Mayor deserves at least one evening of your attention.
For the adventurous, trust the bartenders’ drink choices; the contents may be a mystery – or even on fire – but the result is usually supremely tasty and better than an ordinary cocktail. Shots or chupitos are most popular in Spain with each bar offering its own mini specials – la Chupiteria located in Plaza de Monterrey has every option imaginable. Amadeus and the Irish Rover are great spots to grab one drink before going to a club or to stay at for hours as locals fill the bar. You don’t have to be in a club to get moving since most bars turn into dance spots late at night.
Some of Salamanca’s clubs are most frequented by foreign – namely American – students on abroad trips to the University. They will be empty before midnight so find a bar to start off the night. Although they may not be a true taste of a native’s night, these clubs are just as fun as any other option with excellent dance music and reasonable drink prices. Many offer drink specials and most have promoters wandering the streets to advertise specials. Attend Camelot, Morgana, Cum Laude or Erasmus, all on or near the Calle de los Bordadores just minutes west of the Plaza Mayor. Gatsby is most common with university students and is located in the center of town.
Veer away from this area to avoid tourist-heavy spots and try some bars and tapas in the surrounding area. Tuesdays are the official day for foreigners, Thursdays are for college students, while everyone is out together on the weekend. Everyday of the week is a party night somewhere. Clubs stay open all night and some don’t even get going until 3 a.m. so take advantage of the Spanish siesta to keep your batteries charged.
