Sacramento is an hour from anywhere you'd want to be: an hour from wine country, an hour from the beach, an hour from Yosemite and the Sierra mountains.
One of the most famous and also most fun things to do in this area is to go wine tasting. Napa and Sonoma lie to the west, or take the wine roads less traveled and visit some of the smaller and lesser-known areas. To the east is the Sierra foothills and Amador county, or head south just a few miles to visit Lodi or Clarksburg, up-and-coming wine regions. The area is known for its Zinfandels, so hopefully you're in the mood for red!
The beach is a short drive away, and there are endless choices for swimming and sunbathing in summer, and whale- and seal-watching in winter. Or stick closer to Sacramento itself, and visit one of the many lakes within a short drive - and even Tahoe isn't that far. That means houseboats and relaxation in summer, and skiing and snowboarding fun in winter.
Of course, that's not to knock Sacramento itself: there's plenty to do around here as well. With the Sacramento and American rivers running through, there are fishing, birdwatching, and boating opportunities all around. Plenty of casinos await those desiring a little gambling on their vacation. And this is the capital of California, and there are the capital buildings and park to tour and enjoy. Take a peek at the governor's office, or visit the capital library. Lots of history can be explored in the form of museums and landmarks, too, which commemorate the city's gold rush and railroad histories.
Sacramento has its own professional and minor league sports teams, including the Kings (basketball) and the Rivercats (baseball), and stadiums to match. Go to a game when another California team (like the Lakers or Warriors) is in town to see some good old-fashioned hometown rivalries going on. There are also plenty of evening options, with the Arco arena in Sacramento, the Mondavi center in nearby Davis, and lots of smaller music venues all around the city.
