St. Peter's Square is the gateway to the Vatican, the city within Rome. A visit, whether a morning or afternoon, a full day or a month, requires a walk through the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica, but that's not all there is to do in this neighborhood. Papal audiences are held weekly on Wednesdays, likewise masses on Sundays. If you find the museums too taxing, take a walk through the Papal Gardens. Or else invent a walk of your own, spying some of Rome's emblematic fountains such as the Fountain of the Tiaras, just below the Passetto, and heading towards the Borgo, the medieval neighborhood at the Vatican's front door. Castel Sant'Angelo and its spectacular rooftop are a must see. And for a curiosity, visit Rome's oldest hospital, Santo Spirito. Modern historians will enthuse over the Carabinieri museum, dedicated to the former king's policemen and their weapons.
