Staying as close to St. Peter's Square is often a priority, but finding a good hotel in the Vatican neighborhood is almost as infernal as a never-ending scavenger hunt, thanks to the tourist mongers. Ironically, three of the very best hotels are literally a stone's throw from the square and are also the very best. Hotel Columbus is in the 15th century Palazzo della Rovere, family palace of both Popes Sistus IV and Julius II-- Sistine Chapel comissioner and Michelangelo patron. Residenza Paolo VI is just behind the Vatican's colonnade and the rooftop terrace rivals St. Peter's cupola terrace. Palazzo Cardinal Cesi rests almost next to Hotel Colubmus, a quite cardinal palace with beautiful inner garden. Rounding out the luxury and excess is Villa Laetitia along the Tiber river in the adjacent Prati neighborhood, owned by fashion family Fendi and appropriately opulent. Also in Prati is the Farnese is a tasteful and classic boutique hotel. Economic and efficient are Hotel Alimandi, at the entrance to Vatican museums, Roma dei Papi hiding itself near Papal hideaway Castel Sant'Angelo, and Borgo Pio 2000-- affordable vacation apartments. Stepping up and climbing the hill is the Hotel del Gianicolo which also has an outdoor pool, reminiscent of the 1920s. Or further out and guaranteeing quite is the Crown Plaza Hotel in its gated green pastures.
