Ah yes, Riyadh. Like Disneyland took a wrong turn at religious avenue and Mickey turned into an evil dictator with a belly laugh. As with most of the oil countries that have lined their pockets with the American blood-dollar and keep their inhabitants in the 14th century as they lock their wife in the trunk of the car because she talked to someone that wasn't her husband, Riyadh is full of the hotels that grand, marble-lobbied hotels that have given rise to rosy-eyed views of an absurdist land that seems like it's on its own little planet. There are hotels here that seem like they could be palaces with the sheer amount of materials, work and size of the buildings they run in what is essential an uninhabitable piece of land if it wasn't for the advances of the 20th century. You can find everything from Western chains like the Sheraton or Four Seasons here, but there's also many Saudi-owned hotels that range from four-star to the rinky-dinky hotels that might or might not have air-conditioning if you're looking for that authentic peer into the life of the average Saudi.
