Day 1 - Rio de Janeiro
If you're looking for cheap hotels in Rio de Janeiro, it makes good sense to look for accommodation away from the super-touristy beach neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema. Hotel Gloria is an attractive hotel, steeped in history, with wonderful gardens and outdoor pools. The hotel's location close to the Gloria Metro Station makes it easy to reach the beaches on sunny days, as well as the historic buildings and cultural centers of Centro and the surrounding districts. When the heavens open in Rio it can be tempting to stay inside, but it's well worth making the effort to museums and galleries - most of which are free to enter. One note though - galleries and museums are generally closed on Mondays. Start your day with breakfast at the hotel, before taking a tour around the impressive Museu Nacional de Belas Artes. From here, grab your brolly and make a dash for the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, which houses some impressive visiting exhibitions. Take afternoon tea in the impressive surrounds of Confeitaria Colombo, before taking in the sights and sounds of Brazil's diverse cultures and traditions at the Museu do Folclore Edison Carneiro. Head back to the hotel for a quick change before grabbing a cab to Lapa, for dinner and dancing at Carioca da Gema.
