It may be located in the little-visited (by tourists) North Zone of Rio, but there are a handful of interesting things to do near Maracana Stadium.
Not far from the iconic stadium is the National Museum, which is set in beautiful gardends and also houses a very good restaurant, as well as some fascinating exhibits. The palacial building itself merits a visit, even if your interest in history is minimal.
Right next door, the city's zoo is a fun and educational trip for animal enthusiasts of all ages, and it's easy to while away an entire day here.
Close by, the Feira Nordestina (Northeastern Fair) in Sao Cristovao is a great place to sample Northeastern food, music and culture, and is best visited at weekends, when the fair straight through from Friday evening to the early hours of Monday.
Rio's downtown attractions are also relatively close to Maracana Stadium, and can be easily reached by Metro.
