Wine bars in Rio de Janeiro can be surprisingly hard to come by - largely because beer and cocktails are much more popular than vinho in this part of South America. National wines are only just starting to come into their own, and imported wines are expensive, and as such, the wine bar concept has not been a huge success over here. That said, the chic and sophisticated Zona Sul (South Zone) offers plenty of opportunity to sip wine in Rio, even if the bar in question is not a dedicated wine bar.
In the residential neighborhood of Botafogo, Champanharia Ovelha Negra offers a chance to sip at Champagnes, Proseccos, Cavas and other sparkling wines, while Castelo do Vinho is worth the taxi ride for its immense selection of wines.
For stylish wine-drinking in Rio try Leblon's Bar d'Hotel, while the many smart kiosks that line Copacabana beach offer plenty of options for sipping wine right on the sands. A word of warning - be wary of very cheap red wine in Rio de Janeior, as it is usually chilled, sweet, and served from a plastic bottle.
