While Riga is small enough to walk through and see all the sites, a guided tour is probably best if Latvian isn't your first language. It can be very hard to understand what you're looking at on a map when it's all in Cyrillic. Anyways, Riga has buildings with great Soviet-influenced architechure that managed to retain Latvian-style even with the oppressive hand of Stalin reigning down and they're a treat that anyone with ties to the Baltic region can appreciate. Riga also has many historical buildings dating to the 1300's, many of them churches, that have stood the test of time and are much celebrated as a national treasure for their age. There's a lot to see in Riga. Plan ample time!
