NileGuide Expert tip:
From the Piazza Fontana roundabout, follow the narrow, steep road uphill to see the Church of San Giovanni del Toro and the beautiful views from the Belvedere Principessa di Piemonte.
Description:
Piazza Fontana Moresca is a small piazza named after the central fountain featuring stone statues of a winged lion and a bull. The current statues are replicas of the originals, which were found in the
Duomo. Also in the piazza is arched entrance to the Church of Sant'Agostino (St. Augustine), which was founded in the 10th century as a church dedicated to Ravello's patron San Pantaleone. In the 13th century it became a monastery of the Augustine order, but by the 17th century it had been abandoned and partially collapsed. From 1965-68 the entrance of the church was turned into a monument to those who had fallen during the World War I, which can be seen from the Piazza Fontana. The beautiful views of the adjacent town of Scala across the valley are another reason to stop in this pretty piazza.
