Once a part of the historic Republic of Amalfi in the Middle Ages, the town of Ravello has a wealth of history to discover. Start in the center of town in the
Piazza del Vescovado where you'll find the
Duomo dedicated to Ravello's patron San Pantaleone. Step inside the cool interior to see two impressive artistic works in the central nave: a 13th-century pergamo and a 12th-century ambone, both used for religious services in the Middle Ages. From the piazza, look for the separate entrance to the Duomo Museum, which contains beautiful reliquaries and religious works.
Just across the piazza is the entrance to
Villa Rufolo, an impressive garden estate built in the 13th century for the wealthy Rufolo family. In addition to gorgeous views, a walk through the gardens is a chance to glimpse the medieval splendor of Ravello. At the tip of the promontory where Ravello is located lies the expansive
Villa Cimbrone. While the architecture is primarily 19th century, it is beautifully set in a wonderful blend of English and Italian garden traditions.
Although you might miss the entrance at the base of the Duomo, you won't want to miss visiting the
Museo del Corallo, dedicated to the art of coral carving with many fine examples on display. Take home a work of this traditional art from master carver Giorgio next door at the Camo workshop.
The
Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer, opened in 2010, is making history in a different way. Designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, this work of modern architecture has added a touch of the 21st century to the UNESCO protected Amalfi Coast.
