NileGuide Expert tip:
If the band is playing, don't expect to hold a conversation. Otherwise this is a fine place for a casual romantic dinner.
Description:
The Beach Hut is best known for its Sunday pig spit, which draws lots of attention to passerby on the main road, where the pig is roasted in front of the entrance to the cafe, a high-traffic spot across from a busy supermarket. Behind the gate, the wooden tables and chairs are set up around a mango tree, enclosed from the sea by a fence, but open enough to get an ocean breeze. On the weekends there is often live music, which dominates the small space but makes The Beach Hut a lively hub of activity. The chef, a charismatic character who trained at the Paul Bocuse Culinary Insitute, sure seems like he's having fun here in Puerto Viejo in the little kitchen adjacent to the cafe area. The menu is a fusion of French, Mediterranean, flavors and is updated often, reflecting what's in season; typically lots of salads and seafood, and of course the Sunday pork special.
