Description:
Cholla Bay is a small development which originated as a fishing village. In the 1930's, there was no paved road to Puerto Penasco from the states; however, it was the closest beach for Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona residents. This Old Mexico seashore soon became a popular retreat for fisherman from the United States, and the town of Cholla Bay evolved with quite the eclectic mixture of mis-matched buildings. Today, you will see a few remaining rusted, old trailers with palapa shades, fishing cabins and boat houses. With electricity coming to town in the 1990's, there is now much new construction in Cholla Bay, including newer condo complexes and gorgeous, beach homes.
From JJ's Cantina, a local landmark, you can see across Cholla Bay to the Pelican Beach area and the developments of Laguna Shores and Laguna del Mar. Cholla Bay itself is an incredible bay which almost empties out at low tide. It is a perfect place to explore tide pools and search for sand dollars or clams.
When the Bay fills, it is a broad "lake" which lends itself to all sorts of watersports: jet-skis, wakeboarding, kite sailing, etc. Just to the south of the Cholla Bay community is the steep Pelican Point or Competition Hill. Here the backside of this mountain has filled with sand and is a common testing ground for 4x4's! Who can make it to the top with their quad, rhino, ATV, truck or even the occasional local car? From the top of the hill, you have an absolutely magnificent view of all of Sandy Beach and Puerto Penasco. (But, seriously . . . don't get stuck.)
If you visit Puerto Penasco, don't neglect a visit to Cholla Bay. This is the original tourist and fisherman's retreat!
