Malecon (Fish & Shrimp Market)
NileGuide Expert Says:
There is a certain romance at day’s end in Penasco.
Day fades to evening. Families head to the Malecon. Vendors begin preparing tacos, hotdogs & churros.
The balloon vendor arrives.
And the ice cream man with his little cart and bell.
As the sun slowly fades into the Sea . . .

Description:
Completed in 2007, Puerto Penasco's Malecon, or boardwalk, provides a calm and relaxing place for families or couples to gather and enjoy a tranquil evening. The local families gather along the malecon each evening, for a leisurely stroll along the wide park area and to let the kids play, buy ice cream or a balloon while dad and mom watch the setting sun over the Sea of Cortez.
From the Malecon, you can see the Shrimp boats and sunset cruise boats departing or returning to the Marina. You may spot dolphins out on the water, watch the pelicans fighting over bits of fish on the rocky beach beyond the fish markets; and of course, you can buy fresh fish or seafood at one of many fish markets.
Street vendors and local shops with every sort of Mexican souvenir, handicrafts, pottery, glassware, jewelry, hats and blankets line the Malecon. Or you can enjoy local mariachi bands playing in the open air. The sunsets along this boardwalk are intense as the sun slips over the horizon and for a few minutes the Baja Peninsula over sixty miles across the Sea becomes visible.
The Malecon offers an incredible choice of food. From the simple street food of carne asado tacos or bacon wrapped hotdogs to the upscale sit-down restaurants offering fresh seafood and romantic views, there are numerous restaurants and bars all along the Malecon. And, there are at least four stops for ice cream in the Malecon! As the evening turns to night, on the weekend you will find several bars offering live music.
The Malecon area includes Luis Donaldo Colosio Plaza, the Fundadores Park, 'El Camaronero' statue and the outdoor Ampitheater. Local events sponsored by the town are often held in this area.
