Description:
The construction of the convent of the Franciscans nuns of Santa Clara began around 1585. At the beginning, a little church was set up in a room on the ground floor, but in 1642 a beautiful church was built. In 1711 an earthquake damaged the church almost completely, so in 1714 the church was rebuilt. The original baroque altarpieces were lost and in the XVIII century the current neoclassic altarpieces were built. Some of the painting in the church date from the first church including the Virgen de los Dolores, two archangels and some viceregal paintings.
In 1861 a law reduced the convents in México, the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara were forced to leave their cloister and they took refugee in the Convent of San Roque. In 1867 what used to be the Convent was sold and new constructions were built there.
Some of the most famous and delicious Mexican Dishes were created in the Convent of Santa Clara. The Mole Poblano, the Camotes and the Tortitas de Santa Clara among other dishes come from the kitchen of the Convent that used to be next to this church.
That's why the street that leads to this construction is nicknamed
Calle de los Dulces (the Candy Street) and along it you'll find all kinds of local candies.
