Parque Nacional Huerquehue (WHERE-kay-way) is the national park closest to Pucon, though some visitors to Pucon will choose the nightlife and hotsprings over long hikes in the monkey-puzzle tree forests. That is to say that while the park is visited, it is definitely not overrun, and you can spend
The park's territory is 12,500 hectares and varies in altitude from 720 to 2,000 meters. May to September is considered the rainy season, and the park does get a hard freeze in the winter months, due to the altitude. There are four distinct peaks in the park, and the terrain is rough, with steep drop-offs. There are abundant springs, streams, lakes, lagoons and waterfalls. Several hiking trails. It is 35 km from Pucon, on the road to Caburga, and there is public bus service from Pucon. Guided daytrips to the park start at about $40, and can be found at most of the outfitters on Pucon's main street.
Camping is possible, though in campsites, not back-country, on the shores of lake Tilquilco, with picnic tables, firepits and bathrooms.
Unusual animal sightings may include the zorro culpeo (a fox), mono del monte (a small marsupial) and the peregrine falcon.
