Description:
The mission of this beautiful respite from everyday life is simple: to provide a place for people to come to practice their Zen meditation.
Providence Zen Center prides itself on being a resource for those new to Zen meditation and those who have long practiced. A residential and non-residential community that's based on regular visitors and new ones, the center provides training for all through special retreats, daily practice, and through its very existence in a beautiful corner of the Ocean State.
Free walk-in meditation instruction classes are available throughout the month were people can learn about zen teaching and meditation techniques. These events -- often held on specific Wednesdays and Sundays of each month -- include a public dinner; meditation instruction class; chanting; and a sitting and walking meditation that's sometimes led by a guest speaker. Always check the website before planning your visit for sked changes.
A caveat: If it's hard to find the
Providence Zen Center
in Providence, that's because it's not actually there. Founded in Providence in 1972, in 1979 it moved to its current, gorgeous, 50-acre home amid the sights and sounds of nature in nearby Cumberland, RI.
