Gone are the tattered leather Chesterfields, stained wooden tables and out-of-tune piano of ye old Barons (a Kings Cross institution). In sails a cruise liner straight from Miami (or the Hamptons) in the form of Beach Haus. More lighter, brighter and blonder, this latest incarnation in Roslyn St tries hard to be exclusive with swipe-card member access, but quieter mid week sojourns require nothing more than a smile at the door.
But bring some plastic with a big credit limit, especially for the shared cocktails (giant buckets of ice and alcohol with straws the size of broom handles – serves 4 to 10 depending on your immunity levels – costs start at $140). Not happy sharing? Magnums of vintage French bubbles should do the trick; perfect for washing down any one of several caviars offered.
A 'leave your cameras at home' policy, possibly intended to placate Facebook fearing celebs, only adds to the wannabe exclusivity. And that's probably what management want; if you have to think twice about the pretentiousness, you should probably look elsewhere (Eau de Vie in the Kirketon Hotel comes to mind).
