Description:
Located just 15 minutes north of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Eliot, Maine, offers much in the way of enjoyable water sports activities.
Here, the Eliot Boat Basin, located at 63 Junkins Lane just off of Route 103, is a superb launching point for both boats and kayaks. The basin's boat launch empties directly into the Piscataqua River which, at this point, is more tranquil than in nearby Kittery. The basin's location near Portsmouth means that is possible for paddlers to get close to enormous container ships anchored nearby. The shoreline offers up sights of huge trees gnarled by fierce winter storms or even downed like large whales. Tidal pools and wetlands can also be seen along the shoreline, as well as seafaring birds that rest on coastline boulders. Another nice feature is an unnamed, small island in the center of the basin. Paddlers often enjoy beaching their kayaks to explore this property which, while small, is heavily wooded with beautiful upland views of the entire basin. For those seeking to rent kayaks to travel this waterway, be sure to check out Harbor Adventures in nearby York at: www.harboradventures.com.
