Maurice Sendak, one of the most beloved and creative children's book illustrators, is being celebrated this summer at the York Public Library in York, Maine. "In A Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak" is a free traveling exhibition which opened at the library on July 7 and will continue until August 18.

Sendak is perhaps best known as the iconic artist whose imaginative works have helped to make such books as Where The Wild Things Are and In The Night Kitchen classics for generations of youngsters and adults alike. Visitors to the York Public Library exhibit will not only be able to view many of these illustrations, but also become more familiar with major influences in Sendak's life including his family history and Jewish roots.

Adults should take note of several complementary programs being offered in connection with this exhibition. They include an August 2 book discussion about Issac Bashevis Singer's Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories, which was illustrated by Sendak, and several Jewish-themed film presentations including Radio Days on July 12, Avalon on July 26 and The Chosen on August 9.
