Located in the heart of Saco's historic district, the Saco Museum does a great job of recording the historical influence of Saco and the adjoining southern Maine coastal region. For instance, the museum points out that early European colonists, who fled into Massachusetts to escape the hostilities of the 1670s King Phillip's War, soon found themselves dealing the horrors of the Salem witch trials of 1692. Also, that famous athletic fashion manufacturer Nike had its roots in Saco. Entering the museum, you come upon exhibits detailing the lives of the first European settlers who exploited the bounty of timber, fish and farmland in the area. From here, exhibitions highlight Saco's importance as a center of ship building in the early American nation, followed by the establishment of clothing, shoemaking, and other mill-oriented industries. Museum highlights include the recreation of a girl mill worker's bedroom and a child's room featuring toys from by-gone eras. Downstairs, there are several interesting natural history displays.
