Description:
Portland's legacy as Maine's center of commerce is well known. However, by kayaking Portland Harbor and Casco Bay, it is possible to be introduced to a different view of this metropolis. Kayakers will especially enjoy a multitude of islands, owned by the state, which are ripe for exploring or simply enjoying a lunch with spectacular views of the bay. This waterway also serves as an introduction to Portland's past military significance. Here, paddlers can smoothly cruise by massive, long abandoned coastal installations such as Fort Gorges, Fort Scammel and Fort Preble. These stone structures were built to protect Portland – and the United States – from much feared European invasions. Also of note are the Portland breakwater light and smaller lighthouses constructed to aid seafaring navigation and which operate to this day.
