Pittsburgh has Italian restaurants robust and old world, as well innovative and modern. F. Tambellini is known among Pittsburghers for its fried zucchini and it also serves many other traditional Italian favorites. Lidia's is owned by Lidia Mattichhio Bastianich, star of PBS's "Lidia's Italian Table." Lidia's serves her "border" cuisine, which is a mix of northern Italian, Slavic and Austro-Hungarian. Established in 1939, Angelo's Restaurant has a wide variety of old-world dishes as well as American-inspired entrees and sandwiches. Located in Fox Chapel, Donato's offers fresh seafood daily, hand-cut meats and tender veal. Buca di Beppo has traditional Italian cuisine with some innovative inputs. The portions are quite large and more than enough for groups, so you're encouraged to eat family style. Pittsburgh is an evolving city that's keeping the best of its tradition and adding modern flourishes - and the Italian cuisine of Pittsburgh is doing the same.
