Wat Phra Thong is famous for its "half-Buddha" statue. Rather than building a temple and then bringing a statue in, this wat was built around the statue. Legend goes that the statue was discovered half-buried by a child. Although many tried to dig it out, the statue wouldn't budge. Instead, the authorities ordered a shrine built around it, but only after covering the statue with gold in order to preserve. Today, the half-Buddha attracts plenty of Thai Buddhists, who come here to pray. There isn't much to do in the area, so this should be a quick visit on the way to other temples. The grounds around the temple are nice for a stroll, but there's little shade to protect you in the hotter season.
