NileGuide Expert tip:
Games are usually played in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat of the day.
Description:
Sepak Takraw is a sport unique to Southeast Asia. In Phuket, you'll see people (especially men) playing it at King Rama IX Park, the Sappan Hin sports center and other places. In most places, you can join a game if you offer to pay part of the field fee (although playing in parks should be free). If you want more information on how to join a league, you can call the Thailand Takraw Association (Thai only) at 02 282 6771 The sport of Sepak Trakaw is a mix between volleyball and soccer. You play it using anything except your hands and arms, but it's played over a net, just like volleyball. The objective is to prevent the ball from ever touching the ground and instead send it back to the other team over the net. You can kick, knee, shoulder or head the ball. If you're not ready to play just yet, a number of sport venues in Phuket ran small tournaments open to the public. Get a ticket (which are usually just a few dollars) and enjoy the excitement of this unique sport.
