Perth's great weather means outdoor activities are popular amongst the locals as well as the visitors. Many of Perth's favourite outdoor activities involve water, since we have many beaches plus the Swan River all on our doorstep, as well as Rottnest Island just a short ferry ride away. One of the most exciting outdoor activities you can do in Perth is to go sailing on the STS Leeuwin, a replica sailing ship that offers half-day to multi-day voyages, and where the passengers get involved in hauling sheets and setting sails.
Landlovers can try spending a few hours or a few weeks on the Bibbulmun Track, a walking trail running from Perth down to Albany in the south-west of the state. Camping places are available along the route and the bush and forest scenery is spectacular. Alternatively, get on a bicycle and discover the nooks, crannies and hidden beaches of Rottnest Island - you can also jump off your bike and go snorkelling in one of the quiet bays there, too.
Other outdoor activites in Perth include golf at courses such as the Burswood Park Golf Course, and dozens of others littered throughout the Perth metropolitan area, or enjoying wildflowers and nature (and playgrounds for the kids) at the vast Kings Park just above the city centre. You can also spend a day at one of Perth's numerous beaches, such as Scarborough Beach, swimming, surfing or playing beach volleyball. And for more contact with the local wildlife, you can try a day trip over to Penguin Island or an evening walk through the Karakamia Sanctuary in the hills.
