Park City's wild success as a residential and tourist town certainly does not stem from a convenient location. Situated high in the Wasatch Mountains and quite far from any major river or bay, the modern incarnation of Park City arose from its rich recreational offerings. Once an 1870s mining boom town, later a registered ghost town, Park City finally experienced a rebirth beginning in the 1960s as an alpine skiing destination. Not long after, Park City hosted World Cup Skiing events in 1985, and in 2002 much of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics.
Today three major resorts, Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, and The Canyons, bring people from all over the world to live and play. Though skiing functions as a thriving staple of Park City's economy and culture, it is a far cry from the Park City's only offering. Alternative winter activities are many and include snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, tubing, and more. And winter is not the only season to visit!
The warmer months provide some of Utah's most fun outdoor activities. Located at an elevation of roughly 7000 feet (half a vertical mile above Salt Lake City), Park City boasts much cooler temps and much less urban crowding Salt Lake proper. During the summer you can enjoy cross-country or lift-served, downhill mountain biking, trail running or hiking, horseback riding, and even hot air ballooning. The city and resorts keep a busy events schedule, too, offering outdoor concerts and other events. Take a trip to the Utah Olympic Park and watch ski jumpers refining their tricks over a pool or enjoy a ride down Park City Mountain Resort's Alpine Coaster.
