NileGuide Expert tip:
This is the best value hammam in Paris
Description:
Near the Jardin des Plantes on the Left Bank, and part of the Grand Mosque of Paris, this is the most authentic hammam in town. Don't come here for heaps of designer towels. Either bring your own or rent (a non-designer) one on arrival. Do come to enjoy its 1920s style, with mosaics, marble columns and a stone fountain whose splashing water adds to the Moroccan atmosphere. Opt for a simple steam or a package of steam, massage, body scrub and traditional black soap. The sexes are strictly segregated to different days and times and swimsuits must be worn. Despite these strictures, the hammam has become very popular with ordinary Parisians so try not to visit at weekends. When you have lost a few kilos sweating in the steam, you can put it all back on at the Mosque's restaurant, with a tagine or a plate of couscous, or drink a mint tea and nibble a north African pastry in the Moorish tea room.
