11th Arondissement - Bastille Canal St Martin
Much of the 11th arrondissement is a fairly ordinary neighborhood: a quartier populaire for people on modest incomes, office workers and young families, where everybody is home at eight p.m. to watch the soccer on TV.Not so, however, in the Bastille area on the southwestern corner of the 11th which is Paris's premier party mile: this is that part of the capital that never sleeps. There is something here for everyone's taste: live music, salsa dancing, electro, you name it. On top of that, all of these bars & clubs are nestled in a maze of ancient Parisian streets and passages, which makes Bastille the ideal place for a night out to remember (or not).
There is a second nightlife centre around the venerable Bataclan concert hall on Rue Oberkampf, which is old enough to have witnessed performances of Buffalo Bill and Maurice Chevalier, also featuring the ultra-hip Nouveau Casino. And for those of you with more old-fashioned musical tastes, there is always the Opéra Bastille, the capital's main stage for the lyrical theatre. Tickets to opera and ballet performances can be surprisingly cheap, but be sure to book early if you plan to go as they sell out quickly.
