Carfax is commonly considered to be the axis of Oxford, with Cornmarket (north), St. Aldate's (south), High (east) and Queen (west) Streets meeting at the Carfax four-way junction. The name 'Carfax' is thought to derive from the Latin quadrifurcus meaning 'four-fourked', or from the Old-English term Skarfolkes which named an open area in the centre of a town. On its northwest corner, Carfax Tower offers stunning views of the surrounding City Centre. The crossroads are a good place from which to orientate oneself with the city's layout.
