In Oxford you don't have to look very far to find some great Italian food. The city is packed with small, independent shops selling good quality Italian delicatessen items to eat on the go at lunchtime or for snacks during the day. At supper time, or indeed at lunch time if you need a proper re-fuel after an active morning of sightseeing, there are a number of centrally located, cost effective and, above all, tasty restaurant and take-away options to choose from. What is more, the majority of Italian restaurants in Oxford are independent, which makes them original and intimate in a very personal, Italian way! Mario's, for instance, has been running for more than 30 years and is something of an Oxford institution. Luna Caprese, too, has been run by the same family for generations and is nicely situated an invigorating walk-away from the city centre. That is not to say that the chain restaurants fall behind in food quality, it is just that they are more predictable and have less character. Pizza Express in particular is well-known for its sourcing of high quality ingredients and for producing consistently good food. Fasta Pasta in the Covered Market is a great shop for buying fresh pasta, sauces, juicy antipasti and many other Italian delights. Though small, the shop should not be underestimated- get there early at lunchtime to avoid the long queue. Buon Appetito!
