Description:
Maine's rich agricultural history is richly chronicled at the University of Maine's Page Farm and Home Museum in Orono. This museum is a great destination for families curious about farming life in the Pine Tree State. The restored White Farm, a classic post and beam structure built in 1833, is the focal point of the museum. Children will especially enjoy the one room schoolhouse featured on the museum's property. Replica structures of a 19th century carriage house and blacksmith shop, complete with demonstrations depicting the work of these pre-modern age trades, should also be included on tours of the museum. Also worth a visit is the Heritage Garden featuring expertly grown examples of flowers, vegetables and herbs grown on the farm from 1865 to 1940. In addition to these features, this destination also features an expansive collection of farming tools, artifacts and technologies worth checking out. The museum is a great way to while away an afternoon and, at the same time, learn about a way of life that was vital to the well-being of many generations of Mainers.
