Naples is an excellent destination for museum and art lovers, and exploring the city's many artistic treasures is the best way to experience the vibrant and rich culture of Naples. The world-class collections at the National Archaeological Museum are worth the trip to Naples alone. Inside you'll see most of the incredible finds uncovered at Pompeii, Herculaneum and other ancient Roman towns that once lined the Bay of Naples. The Capodimonte Museum is home to one of Italy's finest collections of paintings and decorative arts. (You've heard of Capodimonte porcelain, right?)
If your tastes tend toward something a bit more modern, you'll want to check out the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina, Naples' excellent modern art museum called MADRE. Andy Warhol's colorful depiction of an erupting Mt. Vesuvius is one of the museum's most popular pieces, but MADRE has a diverse collection and presents many special exhibits throughout the year.
Don't neglect the many churches of Naples if you're looking to experience what makes Neapolitan culture so distinct. The Cappella Sansevero and Pio Monte della Misericorida are mini-museums, and the Charterhouse of San Martino high atop the Vomero hill houses one of the best art collections in the city.
