First Time in Munich
Description:
The centuries-old architecture and the post-war rebuilding efforts combine to make Munich a fascinating historical city. The palaces, parks, museums, churches and more offer a look into what life was like in old Bavaria yet also celebrate the beauty of modern Munich.

Day 1 - Munich
The Hotel Exquisit is in the ideal location for a first visit to Munich, in a quiet and safe neighborhood yet just a brief walk from the Marienplatz downtown and right next to a subway station. Simply furnished but spotless and with excellent food and service, this hotel is a great introduction to Munich's hospitality. Begin your trip with a visit to Marienplatz, the center of the city geographically and culturally. Get to the square by 5:00 pm to hear the Glockenspiel bells toll in the Neues Rathaus, the Gothic new town hall that was built around 100 years ago. Stay off the tourist track with dinner and a big beer at Durnbrau, one of the lesser-known and more authentic Bavarian food and beer places in the area.

Day 2 - Munich
Begin your first full day in Munich with a climb to the top of the St. Peter's Church, the oldest church in Munich, where on a clear day you'll have a spectacular view of the Alps on one side and the Olympic tower on the other. Visit the Altes Rathaus, the former town hall, and spend some more time walking around the area surrounding the Marienplatz, filled with shops and cafes. Spend the entire afternoon in the Deutches Museum, fulled of fascinating exhibits about navigation, transportation, biology, astronomy, metallurgy, and countless others, with something to interest any visitor. Definitely bring your walking shoes, as the place is expansive. One of Munich's great old dinner places, Boettner has been around for over a century, and has gourmet Bavarian with a French twist, including several excellent fish dishes.

Day 3 - Munich
Munich has some spectacular churches, including the Frauenkirche, or "Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady", which is Munich's largest and dates back to the 1100s. Climb the south tower for a panoramic view of the city. The nearby Asamkirche is an incredible example of the rococo style, and has an interior full of ornate decorations, paintings, and sculptures. Built by the Asam brothers as their own private church, it looks down upon their former home. Spend the rest of the day with a visit the Schloss Nymphenburg, one of Munich's most impressive sights, just a 20-minute tram ride from the city center. The palace itself is massive and full of artifacts and works of art, and there are a number of other houses, pavilions, and temples around the beautiful surrounding grounds. There's also a great outdoor cafe for lunch or a snack, and you can spend hours wandering the parks just looking at the sculptures, gardens, and swan-filled canals. For dinner back in the city, Mariandl is a comfortable and fun European cafe with live music and generous helpings.

Day 4 - Munich
The detail of the internal stucco work alone is worth a visit to the huge Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan, another amazing example of the Baroque style. There are also some interesting historical crypts and tombs inside. You can spend hours touring the Residenz royal palace. Buy a combination ticket for the Treasury, Palace, and Theatre, and take the self-guided tour so you can go at your own pace. The museum suffered massive damage during World War II, but the curators removed much of the art and safely stored it during the war, and it has since been beautifully restored, and the collections are impressive, to say the least. With a combination ticket you can see one part of the Residenz, then leave for a snack at a nearby cafe if you're hungry, then come back to see the rest. You can't go wrong with either the 5-course prix fixe or a la carte for dinner at Halali. "Halali" is the German equivalent of "tally ho", and you'll see why when served succulent game meat and fowl. Dessert is great, too.

Day 5 - Munich
In the morning, walk around the Viktualienmarkt, Munich's huge outdoor market full of great German food, drinks, handiworks, and even music on occasion. After, spend some time exploring on foot the area around Maximilianplatz, including the Maxburg-Turm tower and the Wittelsbacher Brunnen, a beautiful homage to the city's water system. Take a break from heavy German cuisine with an early dinner at Zerwick, a fresh and delicious restaurant that just happens to be vegan as well. After, attend an opera at the Bayerische Staatsoper, which has one of Europe's premier opera companies. Some of the world's most talented singers perform here, and tickets can be hard to get. Stop by the box office during the day or an hour before the start of a performance.

Day 6 - Munich
Originally built to display Nazi art, the Haus der Kunst has a fascinating history, along with visiting contemporary art collections. Walk around the neighboring Englischer Garten, Munich's largest park, for some fresh air. Go to Cafe Schmock for lunch, which is a comfortable and classy Israeli restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Alte Pinakothek, one of the world's best art collections, and the Pinakothek der Moderne, the new location of Munich's contemporary art collection. Have a unique experience at Last Supper, a restaurant that is both Last-Supper-themed and full of misbehavior. Regardless of the atmosphere, the food is excellent. Go with an open mind and an empty stomach.
