Whether you are looking for a tasty lunchtime bite, or aiming to really revel in the local delicacies and fine wines extravagances, Montpellier will wow you with its extensive eatery options. The old town offers a fine array of restaurants, many of which are centred on the main square Place de La Comedie, most offering a set menu of the day. Otherwise down by the river is an enjoyable and more unusual gastronomic experience, in a beautiful serene setting.
For true gastronomic excellence, try the Jardin Des Sens. This Michelin star restaurant is renowned far and wide for its sublime cooking techniques and exquisite signature dishes. If this doesn’t tantalise your taste buds, the 25 smartly dressed cooks and ready to whip up whatever you whim or urge demands. Most visitors opt for the set menu, which consists of six courses, usually including a crepes and Terrine, followed by turbot of duck, two puddings, and cheeses. There is also the extravagant option of the nine-course tasting menu, complete with lobster, roasted sea bass, lemon confit oyster, pigeon with cherry jus, and topped off with champagne sorbet. The experienced will be an undeniable gastronomic feast.
If looking for a meal out that isn’t quite as excessive, but still provides superb French cuisine, Le Grillardin offers delicious authentic dishes, at great value. There are set prices for a starter and main combination, which usually includes Foie Gras, fillet of beef, or a tender lamb, and make sure you order an accompaniment of their wonderful Mediterranean salad. The restaurant is located in the beautiful square La Chapelle Neuve, and offers a great terrace for those long summer evening meals.
As a university town, Montpellier also is small budget friendly, and provides some good value eateries. There are many falafel and Moroccan kebab joints located around the Rue Des Ecoles Judiaque. Cepe- a wild mushroom is a particular taste of the region, which will be found on many a Montpellier menu here.
