With the advantage of the Mediterranean climate, many a happy evening can be spent in Montpellier sitting out on a wine bar terrace, sipping on an aperitif at a candle lit table. The medieval part of the city is beset by countless bar-tabacs, with the best place for outside drinks being La Place de La Comedie. Here nearly every pub and restaurant provides outside seating, open and buzzing for business any time day or night. The town is big enough to find diversity in the way night time entertainment, but small enough to bar hop on foot, and with students making up a quarter the population, it can be assured that every Montpellier drinking hole will be teaming with youths all year round.
Around Place de la Chapelle Neuve is where to find the more chic cocktail bars, hidden away amongst the narrow streets and smart squares that the area offers. Le Bistro Gouramand is a great restaurant bar here, with a shaded terrace and old Edith Piaf type musi contributing to a fine French ambiance. For music, head down to La Pleine Lune, a diverse music spot which has been in business since 1968. L’Oxmore is a cafe is situated in the downtown, with a warm setting produced by the oriental style lamps and deep red design scheme. The bar is sure to be always crammed full of party goers, getting down to techno and electro beats. Otherwise, Rockstore is only a few blocks away from here, and very hard to miss thanks to the vintage Cadillac in the entrance. The two storage building hosts a diverse range of music, from reggae to alternative rock band, with the second floor being is generally calmer space, and the best place for a chat and a social drink in a cool setting.
The Montpellier club scene is also thriving, particularly from Thursday to Sunday. For some serious partying, the best options are a little out of the city center, about 10 kilometres east of the city towards the coast. In Espace Latipolia is a complex of four different night clubs where techno and electro booms out until dawn. A night bus service called L’Amigo conveniently connects Montpellier with Latipolia, with the last bus returning to the center at 5 am.
