NileGuide Expert tip:
Set aside ample time to explore Fort Ord. This historic site is best enjoyed over a leisurely afternoon.
Description:
Fort Ord served as a training ground for American troops in every conflict from World War II to Desert Storm. Though it's an inactive military base now, this expansive site drips with history. And it's not just a monument, either. Soldiers lived, ate, slept, and practiced battlefield tactics on the very soil visitors can now walk on. Many barracks and the mess hall still stand, giving this site an eerie yet magnificent feeling of living history, like any great ghost town.
When it was in operation, Fort Ord spread over 28,000 acres, three more than the entire city of San Francisco. Today, much of the land has been converted for civilian use and open space preservation. For military and history buffs, Fort Ord is a site not to be missed. The sweeping views of Seaside and the Pacific are worth the trip up here, too.
