Explore the high ground on the border of Alameda and Santa Clara counties via this aerobic route, which uses the Agua Caliente and Monument Peak trails, and you will be rewarded with great views and the chance to spot aerial hunters such as hawks, falcons, and even golden eagles. Open grasslands dominate here, but you also cross wooded canyons holding Calera and Scott creeks. The climbing sometimes gets steep, and you may find yourself tracing mini-switchbacks across the dirt road that serves as your trail. As you gain elevation, the sight of Monument Peak and Mt. Hamilton, nearby landmarks, may spur you onward. Start at the trailhead at the end of Downing Road just north of Sandy Wool Lake. Follow the Tularcitos, Agua Calientes and Monument Peak trails to the reach the high point.
