Day 1 - Mexico City

Best thing to do is get the Rivera and Fridas out of the way. On this first day you can see not just the work of this great couple, but also take a glimpse at their passionate, rich and at point tumultuous lives. Start with the Museo Dolores Olmedo early in the morning to get a country-hacienda feel while you watch Frida's paintings and Rivera's easel work. Follow it by either the Palacio Nacional or the Casa de Diego Rivera followed by a meal at La Guadalupana, where Frida and Diego used to eat, drink and be merry. You absolutely must check out the Blue House (Museo Frida Kahlo) for the most amazing look at how the couple lived, their friends and rich lifestyle. End the gallery circuit with a quick trip to the Estudio de Joaquin Clausell for a light hearted and fun art stop before a meal at the noisy and entertaining El Chisme in the art deco Parque Mexico in La Condesa.

Day 2 - Mexico City

Now it is time to see the broader scope of Mexican and Latinamerican art. Today you will get to see some of the best exponents of modern art not just from the continent but also with a few dashings of the European greats. Start with the Museo de Arte Moderno where you can see some of the most representative pieces from the continent and enjoy the morning sun in their sculpture garden. Go across the road and browse the Rufino Tamayo. Its changing exhibits are usually the creme de la creme of modern art here and worldwide. Go to Casa Lamm's architecturally stunning restaurant for a lunch break and a browse at the city's most complete art bookshop next door. Rush off to the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Centro and breath in the stunning art deco interior and palazzo-like exterior.

Day 3 - Mexico City

Today you can sample what is currently happening in the Mexican art world. The conceptualists, the avant garde, the video art and every single one of the boundary-pushing art forms that are currently shaping local culture. Start with The Jumex Collection (leave a long time for this as it is a long trip to and from the gallery as well as a massive collection). Come back into the city for a casual bite to eat surrounded by books, comfortable couches and, sometimes, a troubadour or two. Head over to the stunning Galeria OMR where you can enjoy Mexico's top up and coming contemporary artists in a stunning setting. Taxi to the Museo Nacional de las Culturas Populares and make sure you go only to the floors that sound appealing to your particular taste (it is a massive place). Finish the night in the Travazares, one Mexico's most sophisticated and bohemian restaurants and jazz joint.
