Description:
UNAM's 1952 Central Library, a ten-story edifice covered with the world's largest mosaic, is the work of Juan O'Gorman, artist and architect, born in 1905 to an Irish father and Mexican mother. Each façade of the library has its own symbolic theme: Pre-Hispanic culture on the north, Spanish colonization on the south, modern México on the east, and Pre-Hispanic, popular, and student motifs on the west. O'Gorman selected the 3,000,000 individual stone and glass tiles that compose the mosaic, insisting that each Mexican state be represented in the contributed materials. To understand better the mosaic's imagery, purchase and read the English-language brochure, available on the library's first floor. The extent of the library's collection is mind-boggling: 428,000 books in the general collection, 70,000 rare books dating to 1450, 3,507 periodicals, 329,663 digital documents, and 4,100 audiovisual materials. Before leaving University City, visit the former Olympic Stadium across Avenida Insurgentes Sur.
