Description:
The Museo del Chopo is a thriving, multidisciplinary contemporary arts center housed in a historic metal and glass structure in Mexico City's Santa Maria La Ribera neighborhood. Operated since 1975 by UNAM – The Autonomous University of Mexico – the museum presents visual art in exhibition spaces, live performances in a 200-seat auditorium, and film in the 90-seat cinema.
The Art Nouveau style building itself has quite an interesting history: it started life in Dusseldorf, Germany as one of Mexico's exhibition halls at the 1902 Art and Textile Industry Exhibition. When the fair ended, the hall – characterized by translucent white glass panes offering abundant natural light – was disassembled and rebuilt as the Cabaña de la Buena Esperanza (Good Hope Cottage) on Calle Chopo, the street name that means poplar tree in Spanish.
When you're in the area, also take in the Kiosko Morisco.
Open Daily, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Free on Tuesday
