Description:

Mexico City restaurateurs Gabriela Cámara and Pablo Bueno have the Midas touch: first, the fabulous seafood restaurant, Contramar, and now a second, equally fine dining establishment: Mero Toro (mero, the fish and toro, the bull). The name is an appropriate choice because Chef Jair Téllez serves the seafood and meat-based cuisine of Baja California on Mexico's Pacific Coast. The well-to-do clientele doesn't seem to mind that the décor is spare, with a rosy red entrance ceiling and accent walls, and honey colored wooden tables, simply dressed with white napkins and dishes. Try the sea scallops with cucumber, apple, lemon, chamoy, and pistachios or the slowly baked short ribs. Finish lightly with a granité of hibiscus, mezcal, and mandarin orange. Baja California wines dominate a pricey list that also contains vintages from Spain, Chile, and Argentina. Stop for a drink before dinner at the Hookah Lounge, about two blocks away.
