Description:
Mexico's most important concert hall – and perhaps even the most important in all of Latin America – is the Sala Nezahualcóyotl. Located in southern Mexico City on the campus of UNAM in the University Cultural Center (UCC), the Sala was constructed in 1978 and seats 2,436. It is named after the 15th century poet/ruler of Texcoco in pre-Hispanic Mexico, Nezahualcóyotl. The acoustics here are legendary and are likely due to being based on the design of Amersterdam's Concertgebouw, a favorite of the architect and acoustician: Mexican Orso Nuñez Ruiz-Velasco and American Christopher Jaffe. Resident orchestras in the hall include the Symphony of the National School of Music and the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, which present extended annual seasons of daytime and evening concerts. Also located in the UCC other theaters, a cafeteria, and bookstore. The Sala Nezahualcóyotl is across from Azul y Oro, Ricardo Muñoz Zurita's world-famous restaurant.
