Description:

Amate Bookstore is one of the finest sources of English language books about México in the entire country. Located two blocks north of Santa Lucia Park on Calle 60 in the Historic Center, Amate stocks a wide variety of tomes about Mexican history, culture, cuisine, and literature. The helpful staff speaks English, knows the inventory inside out, and gladly makes suggestions to help you find the right book on any Latin American subject that might interest you. Understandably, the travel section is particularly strong with guides to every Mexican state as well as other Central American countries.

Alongside its literary offerings, Amate features an excellent sampling of traditional and contemporary handicrafts, which you can be sure were made by Mexican hands. The original Amate store is in Oaxaca and the company maintains a website; you can order books from the site but Amate ships only to addresses within Mexico.

After buying a book at Amate, walk across the street to Cafe Chocolate, order a nice cup of tea and enjoy a quiet afternoon reading.
