Ulupalakua Ranch straddles the leeward slopes of Haleakala at an elevation of 2,000 feet. The spectacularly scenic drive through the purple jacaranda-filled towns of Kula and Keokea, which leads to the ranch, skirts cattle and horse pastures with panoramic views of Kihei and Wailea, and Kaho`olawe, Lana`i and Molokini in the distance. Renowned as a holiday spot for King Kalakaua and his family, Ulupalakua Ranch's 20,000 acres extend from the ocean to 6,000 ft elevation. Its mission statement says "it is a steward to the land, dedicated to preserving and protecting Maui's open spaces and agriculture, as well as traditional lifestyle and culture."
