Description:
Located on the northern part of Maui's west shore, Lahaina, Maui's colorful historic whaling town, was the capitol of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845, during Kamehameha's reign. Lahaina means "cruel sun" and it is one of the hottest places in Hawaii. After the first missionaries landed here, Lahaina became a popular port for whalers and merchants from New England. Today, Lahaina Town retains much of its antique charm, complimented by modern restaurants and shops. 55 acres of the town have been designated historic districts, containing several National Historic Landmarks, and 31 official sites comprise the historic Lahaina Town walking tour.
